Understanding Knee Anatomy and Function

The knee is the largest joint in the human body, functioning as a hinge joint that allows for flexion and extension, as well as slight rotational movements. It connects the thigh bone (femur) to the shin bone (tibia) and includes the kneecap (patella) and the smaller bone alongside the tibia (fibula). The ends of these bones are covered with articular cartilage, a smooth tissue that facilitates frictionless movement and absorbs shock during activities. Stability and support are provided by a network of ligaments, including the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), medial collateral ligament (MCL), and lateral collateral ligament (LCL). Additionally, two crescent-shaped cartilage structures, known as the medial and lateral menisci, act as cushions between the femur and tibia, distributing weight and reducing friction. This intricate structure enables movements such as walking, running, jumping, and climbing, making the knee essential for most daily activities.
