Dr. Wilford Gibson named First Vice President of the AAOS

We are proud to share that Dr. Wilford K. Gibson, a respected orthopaedic surgeon at Atlantic Orthopaedic Specialists (AOS), has been named First Vice President of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Board of Directors. The announcement was made during the AAOS 2025 Annual Meeting held in San Diego.
In this prestigious leadership role, Dr. Gibson will play a key part in guiding the AAOS’ strategic direction and educational initiatives. His appointment positions him to assume the presidency of the Academy in 2026, continuing his longstanding dedication to advancing orthopaedic care nationwide.
Dr. Gibson brings more than a decade of active service within AAOS leadership, having previously served as Chair of both the Board of Councilors and the AAOS Advocacy Council. His commitment to improving musculoskeletal health and advocating for patients has been recognized at the national level—most notably when he was named the 2022 Congressional Ambassador of the Year by AAOS.
Before entering private practice, Dr. Gibson built a distinguished career in the U.S. Navy. His service included deployments aboard the USS Nassau and leadership of the orthopaedic trauma service at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. Throughout his military career, he received several honors, including the Navy Commendation Medal and the National Defense Medal.
Currently, Dr. Gibson specializes in hip and knee replacement surgery at AOS, with an emphasis on patient-specific solutions, robotics, and minimally invasive techniques. He also continues to support future healthcare professionals as an associate professor at Eastern Virginia Medical School and as a clinical assistant professor at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.
Beyond the clinic and classroom, Dr. Gibson donates his time as a team physician for Old Dominion University’s football and basketball teams—yet another example of his deep commitment to the community and to advancing the field of orthopaedics.
