Dr. Gibson is A proud Virginia native, Dr. Gibson graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Richmond. His passion for sports and sports medicine began in Richmond, as he competed on a national and international level in the 110 and 400 meter hurdles and various sprint relays for the University. After graduation he was awarded an Armed Forces scholarship to attend the Medical College of Virginia School of Medicine. Upon receiving his MD, he was commissioned in the US Navy and completed an Internship in General Surgery. Serving on the USS Nassau (LHA-4) for Caribbean, Mediterranean and Middle East deployments, Dr. Gibson received personal awards including the Navy Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal and various unit commendations. Upon his return he completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Virginia, serving as chief resident during his final year. He pursued additional fellowship training in Orthopaedic Trauma at Tampa General Hospital and Pelvis and Acetabulum (Hip) Reconstruction at Los Angeles County and Good Samaritan Hospitals. He subsequently led the orthopaedic trauma service at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. After his honorable discharge, Dr. Gibson began his civilian practice at Eastern Virginia Medical School and Atlantic Orthopaedic Specialists where he began his practice of orthopaedic hip, knee and shoulder reconstruction and replacement and orthopaedic sports medicine. He is a Team Physician for Old Dominion University.
Dr. Gibson is active in leadership of the Virginia Orthopaedic Society and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). In 2015, Dr. Gibson received the Virginia Orthopaedic Society Career Award. He has published in peer reviewed journals and has special interest in minimally invasive joint replacement and preservation, including the popular direct anterior hip replacement or “jiffy hip.” Dr. Gibson is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in Orthopaedic Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine. Second only to the satisfaction of service and treatment of his patients, Dr. Gibson’s greatest professional achievement has been his election to Secretary on the Board of Councilors of AAOS and progression to Chair elect and Chair of this organization that is the deliberative body of the AAOS representing orthopaedic surgeons in all states, regional societies, Puerto Rico, US Territories, Canada and the US Military. Personally, Dr. Gibson lists his lifetime achievement as being able to convince his lovely wife to marry him more than 30 years ago.

I have visited Dr. Gibson's office multiple times since a knee injury in April 2024 and concerns with osteoarthritis in both knees. I have found both Dr. Gibson and his assistant to be personable and kind, and haven't felt rushed through my visits although I know they are a very busy office. During my last visit, Dr. Gibson and I discussed moving forward with the first of my knee replacements, and I am happy he will be doing my surgery. I have been doing physical therapy at the facility next to Dr. Gibson's office and have heard positive comments about Dr. Gibson from some of the therapists helping me. Today I had an appointment with Dr Gibson’s PA. She didn’t come in and Dr Gibson was working by himself. Even though the was working by himself he did an excellent job. When he came in to see me. I think he’s a great Doctor. I would highly recommend him to family and friends. He did my hip replacement surgery in 2016. Then he did my right knee replacement surgery in May of 2023. Then 6 months later he did my left knee replacement surgery. I haven’t had any problems with any of the surgeries he has done on me. If and when I need my right hip replacement surgery. Dr Gibson is a great surgeon. I had my total knee replacement on 6/29/23. My surgery was a great success and I am very happy with my results. Dr. Gibson was wonderful! It was pleasant to hear that my hips were fine. I just had a little bursitis which he took care of with a cortisone shot. He also gave me exercises to do for my hip. In 2011 Dr. Gibson corrected a meniscus tear in my left knee, I was back to work in less than a week. I'm 61 years old now, he replaced my right hip and I was back to work in 2 weeks pain free. Our 8 month journey with Dr Gibson and his team to coordinate a hip replacement for my 85 year old mother was efficient, kind and accommodating every step of the way. I did not get to see dr gibson this time as i saw him in jan 2025 for knee issue. I was not havin pain in jan so we decided on no cortizone shot that time. Which was agreeable on all. But after bout 3 weeks i started having light pain again n i decided to come in for a shot. I saw his physicisns nurse who was very pleasant and remembered me from one time before.
