Dr. Butkovich has specialized training in multiple shoulder arthroscopic procedures, including shoulder reconstruction, rotator cuff and instability procedures. His arthroscopic and sports medicine expertise also includes knee arthroscopy, ACL reconstruction, multi-ligament knee injuries, cartilage restoration and foot & ankle and upper extremity surgery. While he does specialize in the athlete, Dr, Butkovich takes the approach that we are all athletes to one degree or another and takes care of all orthopaedic issues in any given patient.

Dr. Brad Butkovich is originally from New Mexico, and grew up in Frankfurt, Germany and Virginia. He attended the University of Richmond on a full football scholarship. There he pursued his undergraduate and master’s degrees in Biology. He went on to attend medical school at the Medical College of Virginia and then completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Later, he performed a Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy Fellowship at Orthopaedic Research of Virginia, at the renowned program founded by the late Dr. Dick Caspari. Dr. Butkovich is one of a few surgeons in Hampton Roads to have completed an accredited Sports Medicine Fellowship and to have received separate Board Certification in Sports Medicine through the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
At Atlantic Orthopaedic Specialists, Dr. Butkovich is board certified in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy, as well as general orthopaedics. Being an athlete himself, he has associated with multiple sports entities. Dr. Butkovich worked with the Florida Gators during Residency and was team physician for Randolph-Macon College during his Fellowship. He is an active and ongoing consultant with the Washington Redskins and participates yearly at the NFL Combines in Indianapolis and in Training Camp with the Redskins organization. Dr. Butkovich is currently Team Physician for the Old Dominion Monarchs and has also served as physician for the Eastern Shore Ballet Company as well as the high schools of the Eastern Shore of Virginia.
Dr. Butkovich currently sees patients in the Kempsville (Sentara-Leigh) office and cares for athletes and weekend warriors with various orthopedic issues from the Eastern Shore, Tidewater/ Hampton Roads and North Carolina area.
Dr. Butkovich is involved as a board member with the Virginia Orthopaedic Society and is an active member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine as well as the Arthroscopy Association of North America. He is currently involved in bringing better and more innovative surgeries to cartilage restoration and repair in Hampton Roads as well as pursuing cutting-edge ACL reconstruction and graft augmentation using Platelet Rich Plasma and the “Flash Technique”. He was one of the first orthopedic surgeons in the state of Virginia to perform this technique and continues to innovate ACL reconstruction with ongoing research into using GPS technology for ideal ACL graft placement in surgery.
Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his wife and kids. His wife Stacey, is a flight nurse. When he can find some spare time, Dr. Butkovich enjoys mountain biking, sailing, off-roading (and subsequently repairing) his Jeep, drawing, and reading science fiction.

As a former college softball catcher, I have dealt with my fair share of injuries over the years, most of which I put off as long as I could. I first came to Dr. B for a second opinion on a knee injury in 2021, and he has been my doctor ever since. He has repaired both my knee and my shoulder, and he has most recently helped me successfully heal from a tibia plateau fracture I sustained in a freak gym accident without surgery. I had a knot on my rt arm, been there since I had shingles. Until recently it started hurting and getting bigger. Went to 3 drs on the shore ,had an ultrasound done ,was told I had fluid in it. No one would take it out. The last Dr I went too., I asked her if she refer me to Dr. Bradley Butkovich in VaBeach.Went to his office Told me to get an open MRI .Went to Cheaspeake Imagine . Left thereback to Dr Boctvichsoffice .Told me it was a tumor size of a golf ball. If I didn't get it removed it would continue to grow bigger. I told him I wanted it OUT . He explained what my MRI detailed and due to the fact I have to get surgery on my rotator cuff he EXPLAINED everything to me after he examined my arm weakness & strengths. My sons father and I have both used AOS personally, so when the pediatric orthopedic doctor scheduled us for a cast/ splint fitting for three weeks out. Admittedly, I will put off going to a doctor until I absolutely have to. I am regretting my tendencies in this instance. After dealing with chronic pain after a minor fall for over a year I finally caved. I was expecting to have to wait at least several weeks if not months to get an appointment. Atlantic Orthopedic was able to get me in the very next day! Dr. Butkovich, as well the rest of the staff were all very professional, friendly and efficient. They all took the the time to hear my concerns and I never felt rushed. Diagnostic tests were done immediately, a diagnosis was made, and options for treatment were discussed and implemented before I left the office. Dr. Butkovich is phenomenal. I had a full meniscal tear 3 years ago while training for law enforcement. I was told by multiple doctors that my knee would never fully heal, that it was best I look into a new profession, and that my knee would most likely need to be replaced due to my weight. The 1st meeting I had with Dr. B put me at ease. I felt comfortable w/him and he actively listened to how I got injured. He told me my weight was not the problem, that I was over-exerting myself in my workouts, and that a knee replacement was not necessary. He reassured me that he would have me back in full fitness conditions w/in a year and he 100% kept his promise…I was back in the gym 8 months later. I have 2 tiny incisions that you can barely see thanks to his laser method, and the advice he gave me on my fitness routine helped me build stronger muscle mass around my knee w/o future injury. All visits (pre-op, op, and post-op) went very well. Wait times were extremely short. Exam and diagnosis were quick (this was a pretty simple issue). Dr. Butkovich was extremely friendly. He explained the entire procedure to me. Surgery itself went really well. I was in and out of pretty quickly. Check in process due to COVID is long, but the staff was extremely friendly and the process went very smooth. Post-Op visit was also very quick. Very little wait time. Dr. Butkovich was extremely thorough from the first day we met to discuss my ACL tear up until 5 months post surgery. He laid every option out in a manner I could understand and made me feel confident the decision made was in my best interest. The fact that he himself had torn an ACL and went through the process as a patient made me trust him even more.
