Wilford K. Gibson, MD, FAOA, FAAOS, FACS, an Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and Joint surgeon with Atlantic Orthopaedic Specialists, has received the designation as a Fellow of the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA).
The AOA bestows membership as a Fellow to less than 10 percent of orthopaedic surgeons in the nation. The honor recognizes exceptional accomplishments and leadership in various areas of the orthopaedic specialty and only as a result of a stringent peer-reviewed process.
Dr. Gibson currently sees patients at Atlantic Orthopaedic Specialists’ clinical sites in Norfolk. He is certified in Orthopaedic Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and focuses his practice on orthopaedic hip, knee and shoulder reconstruction and replacement.
A Virginia native, Dr. Gibson graduated from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency and led the trauma team at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Va. He pursued additional fellowship training in Orthopaedic Trauma at Tampa General Hospital and pelvis and acetabulum (Hip) reconstruction at Los Angeles County and Good Samaritan Hospitals.
Dr. Gibson has served in leadership roles in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the Virginia Orthopaedic Society (VOS). In 2015, Dr. Gibson received the VOS Career Award. This year the AAOS selected him as Chair of the Council on Advocacy of the AAOS. He has also served leadership roles with the AAOS as Secretary, Chair-elect and Chairman of the Board of Councilors (BOC). The BOC represents orthopaedic surgeons in all states, regional societies, Puerto Rico, U.S. Territories, Canada and the U.S. military.
Members of The American Orthopaedic Association are referred to as Fellows of The American Orthopaedic Association (FAOA).
